The Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has taken to his official Twitter handle to debunk a statement that is being circulated at present. He said
“A statement is circulating in the Press purportedly from me, stating that we have lifted the restrictions on social distancing regarding places of worship including mosques and churches. This information is FALSE and should be completely disregarded.”
He further stated that
“As I stated in my press briefing on May 18, 2020, the experts are carrying out a risk situational analysis and we will communicate whatever decisions are reached through our Oyo State COVID-19 Task Force Press briefings in due course.”
Moreover, the Governor made some recommendations as regards preventive measures of the pandemic. And he also made it clear that these measures are not cures, they are merely prevention.
“We will issue an advisory based on the advice given by Professor E. Olatunde Farombi, a Professor of Biochemistry and Fellow, Nigeria Academy of Science. This is on foods and natural products useful as preventive measures against COVID-19 and other viral illnesses.
For instance, we have bitter kola, turmeric, zinc, ginger, garlic, citrus fruits, and bitter leaf. Let me emphasize that this advisory is not for the treatment or cure of COVID-19, it is preventive.”
RELIGIOUS LEADERS’ APPEAL
Obviously, people are getting tired of the social distancing but it seems religious leaders are more concerned as religious gatherings have been banned for a while now.
“Regarding our directives on social distancing during this pandemic, we have received requests from religious leaders about relaxing the ban on gatherings to allow religious services to hold.
We are currently in an accelerated phase in the transmission of COVID-19 in Oyo State and the expert advice is that transmission occurs more easily in enclosed spaces. So, we cannot at this time, relax this directive.”
Seyi Makinde has been hailed as the people’s Governor and it seems both indigenes and non-indigenes of Oyo State love him.
